Kumagaya Uchiwa Festival, the largest Gion festival in Kanto
The Uchiwa Festival is a festival of Yasaka Shrine, which is located in this area.
Yasaka Shrine was originally built in the Bunroku era (1592~) as a shrine for Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, which was enshrined at Atago Shrine in what is now Kamakura-machi.
The name "Uchiwa Matsuri" is said to have originated from uchiwa fans distributed at summer festivals, which were distributed by the owner of Senshu-Ro, a Japanese-style restaurant, from around 1902.
During his apprenticeship in Tokyo, the owner was influenced by the Tenno Festival, which was known for the uchiwa flying around, and purchased Shibu uchiwa from the long-established "Ibasen" and began distributing them at Kumagaya's festivals.
Thus, "the tradition that began with the unification of the townspeople," "the inheritance of the festival culture from the Edo period," and "the spirit of the Kumagaya people who have created the festival with their own enthusiasm" have combined to develop the festival into the number one Gion in the Kanto region.
