I've hunted through family albums to bring you some of my only pictures of my McClean relatives of Moys Etra, Castleshane, during the early 1900s. These old photographs show real flesh and blood people who made this old house live over one hundred years ago.
Thanks to cousin Edmond who salvaged many of the family stories and photos from that time.
I came across some family letters written by my father and others during this period. I found them sad reading. Sad that these were my forefathers/relatives who once had lives, loves and dreams but who were now all dead and gone. Sad too that life could not have been a bit happier/easier for them, rather than all the hardship/difficulties that they endured.
(I accept that the McClean family at that time were probably amongst the more well off, -having meals on the table and a solid roof over their heads but there wasn't much comfort fun, rest from labours or luxury of any kind to be had! )
Grandfather Andrew McClean,  strikes me as a typical authoritan figure of the time. In latter days he rather romantically laments for the 'good old days,' when they were all going to  church at Creevagh in the 'car'. I presume that this was the jaunting car or trap. Life here  unfortuantely reminds me of a gloomy Thomas Hardy novel. For as I see it, life seems to have ended up crushing them.
I was obviously happy that my dad had the gumption and wherewithal to get away and meet my mum.
Maybe I'm looking with a jaundiced eye but it seems to me that life at Moys was very much about loss, hard work, loneliness, dull routine and making ends meet, -mere survival.
It all goes to show once again, as if we need to be reminded of it that, life is so short and fragile.
Oh dear I'm falling into McClean melancholy mood!
In the picture above are aunt Louisa,  beside the only picture I have of my grandmother Minnie or Mary Carson McClean. Below uncle Tommy, grandfather Andrew and uncle Isaac McClean. there is another few pictures in the video one is a single large photo of ny uncle John  (not Tommy as I had thought ) and an early photo of my dad Samuel.
