Selena… can you please give us 13 reasons why you’re working with a sex offender?
News just broke that Selena booked herself a role in an upcoming Woody Allen film and the Internet is kind of pissed. For years, Woody has faced sexual assault accusations from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. Dylan alleged that Woody sexually abused her when she was just a young child and both she and her brother Ronen Farrow have spoken out publicly about these allegations. Though Woody has denied all accusations, evidence says otherwise. Ronen has even spoken out on the effect Hollywood has when it continues to promote a sex offender, saying that it “sends a message to victims that it’s not worth the anguish of coming forward.”
Though Selena is not the first young star to accept a role from Woody Allen despite the allegations, it still has a heavy impact. Especially when Selena just co-produced a Netflix show that sheds light on many issues, including sexual assault.
Many have taken to Twitter to share their confusion and disappointment. One user tweeted out “but didn’t your fav help produce a show about sexual assault and rape and how horrible it is yet now she’s working with one” Another user wrote “Definitely lost some respect for her work on 13 reasons for this. It’s not about her career choice, it’s about supporting a sex offender.”
One user actually Selena’s own words against her, tweeting out the quote, “Why can’t people use their voice for something that fucking matters?” – Selena Gomez, July 17, 2016.”
