Iron deficiency anemia starts as normocytic (normal MCV), and then become microcytic (low MCV).
Iron absorption occurs mainly in the duodenum, just after passing through the stomach and its hydrochloric acid (HCl).
There are 4 main subtypes of microcytic anemia:-
1) iron deficiency anemia (IDA)
2) anemia of chronic disease (ACD)
3) sideroblastic anemia
4) thalassemia.

I've discussed all of them in my videos...Check my hematology playlist: https://goo.gl/KxAu6F

► Right Now! You can get access to all my hand-written hematology video notes (the notes that I use on my videos) on Patreon.. Go to Patreon: medicosis Ferrous or Ferric is always confusing.
How is iron absorbed, and what's the big deal?
Iron is related to anemia (big time).
We use iron studies all the time.
This video will make you understand all of this.
It's a 2-part subject, so please watch my next video on iron.
