The face of Commodus who was Roman emperor from 180 to 192 AD. He was the son of the previous emperor Marcus Aurelius and ruled during a period of increasing instability and decline in the Roman Empire.
Commodus inherited an empire that was relatively stable and prosperous, but his reign was marked by a number of problems. He was known for his love of gladiatorial games, which he participated in himself, and for his cruelty towards perceived enemies. He also engaged in a number of military campaigns, some of which were successful, but many of which were costly and ineffective.
He attempted some reforms, such as a reduction in government expenses, but these were not enough to solve the empire's financial crisis.
Commodus was seen as a poor leader by the senate and he had conflicts with them, despite some efforts to increase his popularity among the people.
His reign was also marked by the rise of the Praetorian Guard, who had significant influence over the empire and would play a major role in the politics of the following years.
Commodus was eventually assassinated by members of his own household, in an attempt to put an end to his rule. His death marked the end of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, and the beginning of a period of instability and civil war known as the "Year of the Five Emperors".
