There are coarse and fine sandpapers you can use for this non-essential step. Oil-based stains are more suitable for cleaning, while water-based ones are more resistant to moisture. It can apply a sheen to the surface to protect the stain from rain, mildew, scratches; you can make the furniture look matte or glossy.
