In Vedic astrology, Vakragathi or Vakra means retrograde. When the earth passes by a planet, that planet appears to move backward. To explain this concept, imagine when we are traveling in a vehicle like a car, bus, or train; we feel like we are moving backward when the other vehicles overtake us. It is an illusion. The same happens with the planets. However, this illusionary movement of planets does bestow specific results. Except for the luminaries, the Sun, and the Moon, other planets have retrograde motion. Rahu and Ketu are always in backward movement.
There is a simple calculation to remember this retrograde period easily. Whenever the planets Saturn or Jupiter transits the 5th to 8th houses from Sun, they turn retrograde.
