A 7 segment display is a set of seven bar-shaped LED (light-emitting diode) elements, arranged to form a squared-off figure 8. If all elements are activated, the display shows a number 8. The 7 segment displays are commonly used in digital clocks, radios, timers, watches, and calculators. They can also be found in motor-vehicle odometers, speedometers, radio frequency indicators, and practically any other display that makes use of alphanumeric characters alone.
Construction of 7-Segment Display
There are seven small rectangular LEDs are present in a seven-segment display and each led is called as segment. An additional led is also used in some displays for displaying decimal point to. Position of each led is set and named from A to G and this combination is used to display characters.

7 segment displays are available in different colors, shape and size. But basically 7 segments are available in two different types.
