Cola Coloured Urine

Cola coloured urine or chocolate coloured urine is a clinical manifestation of Paraphenylene Diamine (PPD) poisoning or hair dye poisoning or Kala Pathar poisoning. It is an emerging mode of suicide and homicide, especially in Asian countries like India and Pakistan. Most often, domestic fights results in such suicidal attempts as hair dyes are easily available at homes, or people dissolve PPD in dark coloured drinks like cola drinks to attempt homicide. Most common signs and symptoms or manifestations of PPD poisoning include cervicofacial edema or laryngeal edema (swelling of neck and face), rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of skeletal muscles), hepatitis (deranged liver enzymes), myocarditis and acute renal failure. In this video, the actual urine of a patient with hair dye poisoning is shown which resembles colour of cola drink or chocolate. Actually, PPD poisoning causes rhabdomyolysis leading to myoglobinuria that gives urine cola colour or chocolate or dark colour.
