Five Echoes by Es Devlin for Chanel at the Miami Design District

French luxury house Chanel is celebrating 100 years of its iconic signature fragrance, the Chanel N°5, by commissioning famed artist and stage designer Es Devlin to create a sculptural installation, on show at Art Basel 2021. Open to public, the labyrinth-like immersive project titled Five Echoes emerges as a physical iteration of the scent, coming alive through an animated synthesis of light, colour, and sound, encircled by a temporary, living forest.

Devlin shares in this interview that the installation is heavily underscored by sustainability, as once it closes, the forest of over 1,000 plants, shrubs, and trees will be replanted in parks throughout Miami-dade county. At the same time, the labyrinth's components will be recycled and repurposed.
