Here's a list of some of the differences I discuss and demonstrate in this drum lesson:

Traditional
- Comping and soloing is more language oriented
- Not as dynamically adventurous
- Clear sense of 4 and 8 measure phrasing
- Little usage of textures
- Less usage of toms when comping and playing time
- More traditional usage of rudiments and bop language
- Features the swing and the groove with breaking it up

Some drummers associated with “traditional styles” include:
Max Roach ***
Philly Joe Jones
Mel Lewis
Roy Haynes***
Stan Levy
Sonny Payne
Gene Krupa
Frank Butler
Ben Riley
Frankie Dunlop
Frank Butler
Jimmy Cobb
Sam Woodyard
Art Taylor
Lewis Nash
Kenny Washington
Joe Farnsworth
Gregory Hutchinson ***
Willie Jones III

Modern
- Breaking up the time
- Over the bar line playing using hemiolas, modulations and odd groupings
- Dynamically adventurous
- Texturally Adventurous
- Toms involved when comping and playing time
- May feel less restrictive to many musicians than a traditional approach

Some drummers associated with “modern styles” include:
Max Roach ***
Roy Haynes ***
Elvin Jones ***
Tony Williams
Jack DeJohnette
Paul Motian
Brian Blade
Al Foster ***
Gregory Hutchinson ***
Marcus Gilmore
Tyshawn Sorey
Colin Stranahan

NOTE: This is list of drummers is NOT comprehensive by any means.
