Thousands of Hong Kong high school graduates have found out how they scored on the Diploma of Secondary Education exams. The results released in mid-July 2024 help determine the fates of many who hope to further their educations in Hong Kong’s ultra-competitive education system. Almost 50,000 students sat the examinations in the city where there are no more than 15,000 places available at publicly funded universities. As is the case in most years, the current exams reflected changes to the syllabus and how grades were calculated. One example is citizenship and social development, an exam formerly known as “liberal studies” which has also been revamped and now scored with simple pass-or-fail grading.
