John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” is infamously one of the more difficult jazz standards to improvise over. It’s unique chord progression moves in major 3rds and is commonly referred to as “Coltrane Changes.” Every measure is in a very different key (5 sharps to 1 sharp to 3 flats), meaning that the soloist needs to constantly maneuver between scales that share very few notes in common with one another. In this video we learn how Coltrane connects these disparate keys using 5-1 and 2-5-1 progressions. By breaking down the harmony to its essential elements, we can make improvisation more approachable.
