"Hi guys. I was reading an article by fellow tennis pro Peter Burwash and he was saying that the most effective shot that is used ... well, he was asking the question, "What do you think is the most effective shot that is used the least?" Some people might say, "Well, the drop shot or whatever, short angles," but his answer was the slice forehand. I have to agree.
When you look, especially at the Tour level, you'll see Federer use it once in a while and some of the guys will use it. It's a shot that could be used a lot more. It skids, stays low, so if your opponent has trouble getting low, you can hit it short so it's not only low, they have to move up to hit it. You're changing the pace, the speed. It's like an off-speed pitch. You're throwing him that change of pace.
You can use it for approach shots or you can hit a drop shot so the shot disguises [00:01:30] very well. Slice forehand, I have to agree with Peter Burwash's thoughts on that. It's not used enough. You can use this shot. Remember with the slice you're going to go with your continental grip so the racket face is slightly open. You start higher than the ball and you're coming down and through the shot. That's going to put that [00:02:00] back spin on it. It's going to skid and stay low. The key is make sure you're getting your racket up higher than the ball and you're swinging down on the shot.
If you're having trouble with your slice forehand, if you're popping the ball up too much, it's not going to do you any good if the ball is sitting up. What you want to do when you slice is think of hitting te white part of the net. Just aim for the tape on the net. If you're still popping it up, try and hit the ball in the middle of the net. Try and purposely hit it in the net and you'll start to get that feeling of how much you have to swing down on the shot.
I'm just going to start high and I'm coming down on the shot. That's going to keep the ball low and skid like. Let me demo a few of the slice forehand. We'll just play out some points here and I'll show you when you can use the shot. Now if you know your opponent does not like low backhands, you can slice it to the backhand side. As I mentioned, the disguise is fantastic. You can use it for approach shots or a drop shot.
Here we go. Here you'll see I used the slice forehand on an approach shot up the line. Here I used the slice forehand for its short low skidding shot which forces my opponent to move forward. The slice forehand can be like a change of pace or an off-speed pitch. Here the [00:04:00] change of pace causes my opponent to hit an unforced error. Here I use the slice forehand for an approach shot up the middle. The ball skids and stays low forcing my opponent to have to hit up but he sees I'm coming to the net and he wants to keep it low and he doesn't even clear the net.
