How to measure energy carried by gravitational waves: a pedestrian version of the Trautman-Bondi energy.
Description of the field evolution is presented in terms of "radiation data" instead of "Cauchy data". The approach presented here is applicable to any radiating system. The Trautman-Bondi energy is then interpreted as the actual Hamiltonian density describing this evolution. The mathematics used here is elementary and avoids the construction of a fictitious "metric tensor at infinity."
