Symptoms, Causes & Treatment of Gall Stone Disease By Dr Albinus Lakra

Gallstones form when there are imbalances in the substances that make up bile, such as cholesterol and bilirubin. They can happen to anyone, but risk factors include obesity, female gender, age over 40, a family history of gallstones, and certain medical conditions like diabetes and liver disease. Let us know in detail about the symptoms, causes and treatment of Gall Stone Disease by Dr Albinus Lakra, Senior Consultant- General Surgery at Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jamshedpur.

Incidental or Asymptomatic Gall Stones:
Incidental or asymptomatic gallstones are gallstones that are discovered accidentally during medical imaging or examinations, without causing any noticeable symptoms or discomfort.

Complications Associated with Gall Stones:
Gallbladder Inflammation (Cholecystitis)
Bile Duct Obstruction (Choledocholithiasis)
Gallstone Pancreatitis
Gallbladder Cancer

It's important to note that not all individuals with gallstones will experience complications, and many people may have asymptomatic gallstones that do not cause any issues.

Symptoms of Gall Stones:
Abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right or middle of the abdomen
Back pain between the shoulder blades
Nausea or vomiting
Bloating or indigestion
Intolerance to fatty foods
Belching or gas
Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) if bile ducts are blocked

Causes of Gall Stones:
Excess cholesterol in bile
Excess bilirubin in bile
Gallbladder motility issues
Gallbladder inflammation
Family history of gallstones
Obesity or rapid weight loss
Diabetes or insulin resistance
Certain medications

Treatment of Gall Stones:
The treatment of gallstones varies based on size, location, and symptoms. Asymptomatic ones may be monitored, while cholesterol stones can be dissolved with medications. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the most common approach for symptomatic or complex cases. Endoscopic procedures and ESWL are also options for stone removal.
