Instruments and objects in MIM’s
Instruments and objects in MIM’s Northwest Coast exhibit help re-create the setting of a ceremonial feast. Kwakwaka’wakw master wood-carvers Calvin Hunt and John Livingston made the totem pole and box drum from red cedarwood. To create the box shape for the drum, a thirteen-foot plank was slightly carved and then steamed until soft enough to bend, a method unique to the people of the Northwest Coast. We feel fortunate to have worked with our friends, John and Calvin, on this project; John passed away shortly after it was complete.
