ISRAEL today passed a new law which declares Jewish supremacy in the country - sparking calls of racism and apartheid.

The no-nonsense 'Jewish nation state'  bill downgrades Arabic as an official language and declares advancing Jewish settlement is now officially a national interest.

The controversial "self determination" law, which states Jerusalem is the capital, has been described as a "defining moment in the annals of Zionism" by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It was passed after a stormy session in the Knesset - the legislative branch of the Israeli government -  which lasted for more than eight hours. Sixty-two MPs voted for the bill, with 55 against.

However some clauses were dropped including one that would have enshrined in law the creation of Jewish-only communities.

The Jewish Nation-State Bill, passed just after the state marked the 70th anniversary of its birth, was hailed as a "defining moment in the annals of Zionism" by Netanyahu.

The bill enshrines Hebrew as the only official language of the state, stripping Arabic of that status, and names Jewish settlement a top priority.

Netanyahu said the bill was about defending the Jewish character of the state, which was established in 1948 as a homeland for the Jewish people, "for generations to come".

"We will keep ensuring civil rights in Israel's democracy but the majority also has rights and the majority decides," he said.

The law becomes one of the so-called Basic Laws, which, like a constitution, guide Israel’s legal system and are usually more difficult to repeal than regular laws.

The bill, backed by the country's right-wing government, says "Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people and they have an exclusive right to national self-determination in it”.
