Injustice or a clever interpretation of the rules? Some argue that the 1988 America’s Cup was not a legal match. Legal drama surrounded the 27th America’s Cup well before they got to the start line and well after they crossed the finish line. This Deed of Gift match between the Michael Fay backed Team New Zealand and Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes saw the controversial birth of catamarans in the America’s Cup. This is the story. I have re-edited this footage to make it more fast-paced and watchable. The sound quality is also improved. Thanks to Adam May & Secret Sailing for uploading the original footage. The documentary that much of the footage is taken from was presented by renowned sailing journalist Bob Fisher.
