Icebreaker — a ship with a nuclear power plant, built specifically for use in waters covered with ice year-round. Nuclear-powered icebreakers are much more powerful than diesel. In the USSR they were designed to provide navigation in the cold waters of the Arctic. One of the main advantages of nuclear-powered icebreaker — the lack of need for regular refueling, which is necessary in navigating in ice, when this is not possible or very difficult refueling. All nuclear-powered icebreakers have electrical transmission to propellers. The only country with a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers is Russia.
