Have you heard the Three Phrases Meaning in Vajra Sutra? It appears frequently. A kind of expression. The 1st phrase, for example: Tathagata says, World, there is a world. Comes the next phrase, and it is not the world; the 3rd phrase comes immediately, so it's named a world. The 1st phrase: Tathagata says, World, there is a world. The 2nd phrase, and it is not the world. So name it a world.
Tathagata says, Prajnaparamita, and is not prajnaparamita, so name it prajnaparamita.

Here comes again. Back then, I was fortunate to read Vajra Sutra when studying in the high school. When reading it, I was baffled. The Three Phrases Meaning completely confused me. Our former Chairman Mao Zedong had this talent, he was very enlightened. When he convened a central work meeting and served as the meeting moderator, he would not get to the point directly but would chat for a while to warm up the vibe. Once, he started in this way, everyone (the senior comrades of the party). The chairman said: Have you ever read Vajra Sutra? Everybody was baffled. Why does the chairman talk about Vajra Sutra today? He continued and said, I've read that. It's full of dialectic.

For example, This man is Zhao Bochu, who was the chief of the Buddhist Association at that time. This man is Zhao Bochu, then he is not Zhao Bochu, he is still Zhao Bochu. Then everybody is baffled. When he saw that everyone was confused, he said, Forget it, I don't want to talk about it, let's have a meeting. I always think that young people should understand the Three Phrases Meaning earlier. That is crucial. What does it mean? Tathagata says the world. That is there is a world. You shouldn't regard this world as an entity.
The 2nd phrase, which is not the world. So call it a world. Does the west view the cosmology a physical one? In the past, the smallest unit of an entity was called atom according to atomism. Initially, physicists discovered the smallest unit from a molecular to an atom.

Later, they discovered more basic particles, electron, neutron, and proton, thinking they've discovered the eventual entity. Later, they found that it was not basic enough, it's said there are quarks. Regardless, they endlessly explore what the basic entities that make up the world are. After being influenced by the Western science, we Chinese began to have the concept of entity. It gradually affects the view we see the world. But the world is not an entity. The first phrase,  Tathagata says the world and immediately denies its existence as an entity. The 2nd phrase comes, it is not the world. You denies the entity of world, but you can't denies the world. Although the world is not composed of entities, how is it composed? The origin of conditions.

This is the fundamental rationale of Buddhism, recognized by all sectors. If you don't recognize this, you are not a Buddhist. Dependent origination and the Emptiness of Nature, just a few words. What does it mean? Take this bottle for example. Does it has its own entity? Yes, It does according to the western view. It is made of the most basic materials. The basic particles, for example. Buddhist view - it has no physical existence. It's called that its self-nature is empty. It has no self-nature. Its self-nature is empty originally. Then, how does this bottle come?
5:00
It is formed by the aggregation of various causes and conditions. Various conditions come together to form this thing. But these conditions combined will also break apart. When conditions gather, it arises. When conditions depart, it goes extinct. Everything is the same. You have to agree with this first, or you cannot enter the wisdom of Sakyamuni. I knew these words, Dependent Origination and the Emptiness of Nature, when I was young. Theoretically, I could accept it because everything is impermanent. Nothing is permanent. Everything is impermanent according to the law of arising and extinction. I agree with it. Then I thought I realized Dependent Origination and the Emptiness of Nature. Actually, I didn't get it completely. When did I get it? Not by logic. My mother passed away in 2000, and my father passed away in 2006.
6:00
At the moment my father passed away, I deeply realized Dependent Origination and Emptiness of Nature. I was born in a family consisting of my parents. I grew up in this family and naturally thought this family would last forever. Right? On that day in 2006, I knew it was gone. This is called Dependent Origination and Emptiness of Nature. Everything is like that, including university. Once, it didn't exist and will not exist in the future. We deeply wish, especially a person like me, cultivated by Fudan University. I got the opportunity to study and grow at Fudan.
