The video, available on the company’s YouTube channel ( / @lsptechnologies305 ) and on its website (lsptechnologies.com/) uses action and animation to examine how laser pulses provide beneficial compressive residual stress to prevent corrosion and cracking in key parts, using an automotive crankshaft as example.
“The new video presentation shows our Procudo® Laser Peening System in action, as well as some close-up animation at a microscopic level of how the laser peening process works under the surface of metal,” said Dr. Jeff Dulaney, President, CEO and founder of LSP Technologies.
“This is particularly helpful in communicating the essence of laser peening technology for engineers, production managers, and product development specialists. The video animation, produced by Vital Companies of Columbus, Ohio, demonstrates how laser peening can protect a crankshaft from metal fatigue at typical stress points, a process that can be adapted to many crucial metal components.
In laser peening, precisely controlled laser pulses create a small plasma explosion between the part and a smooth water overlay, which points pressure deep into the part. Video animation of what goes on below the metal surface shows how that plasma pressure expands the volume of the affected metal, producing the benefits of compressive residual stress.
