Can a Deceased Person Benefit From Auspicious Deeds?
Prof. Dr. Bayraktar Bayraklı

Let's say you get a hundred points, and I'm your teacher. Can you come to me and say my teacher, I'm getting a hundred points anyway, this friend got thirty points, and can you give my twenty points to him and pass the class. ? No way. Nobody works for anyone. Nobody goes to heaven or hell with anyone's deeds. Velâ teziru vâziratun vizra uḣrâ (Surah al-An'am, 6/164) says "Every soul earns not [blame] except against itself. No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another". Nobody can be punished by what anyone else does. God says Men amile sâlihan felinefsihi - Whoever does a good deed - it is for himself; and whoever does evil - it is against the self. (Surah al-Jathiyah 45/15).
In a hadith that is said to belong to our Prophet; it is called that İza ma tebnu ademe inkata ameluhu illa min salasin sadakatin cariyetin evilmun yuntefeula evveledin salihin yeduula. Let's interpret the hadith as it is veridical. A deceased person's deed book is not closed for three things. These three things considered in the hadith are sadaqah jariyah, science and dutiful child. What is sadaqah jariyah? For example, a person builds a school, a fountain, a hospital, buy tools for the hospital, these are the sadaqah jariyah. But it doesn't cease if one does it when she/he is still in the world. Or one has scientific discipline, and as long as one benefited from it, he was rewarded. But if he had scientific discipline in the world, he wrote books, if he trained or educated students… Or a person leaves a good son behind, hadith says he prays for him. Doesn't say he practices. It's interesting. I mean, for our mother or father we can pray as May God rest her/his soul, may God forgive my parents. When I'm alive, I pray to one, and one to pray to me for forgiveness, this is done when I'm dead. We can ask for God's help and pray for the forgiveness of both ourselves and others. For example, the person helped others. God sorts out this in Surah al-Baqarah 2/272. In the verse he analyzes; vemâ tunfikû min ḣayrin feli-enfusikum whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves, vemâ tunfikûne illâ-btiġâe vechillah -you do not spend except seeking the countenance of Allah, vemâ tunfikû min ḣayrin yuveffe ileykum - whatever you spend of good - it will be fully repaid to you.  There is no such thing as being repaid to your mother and your father, to the dead…
