Methoni is a beautiful #seaside village in the southwest corner of the Peloponnese and belongs to #Messinia. It has 1200 permanent residents and lies 285 km southwest of #Athens, 62 km from #Kalamata and only 11 km from Pylos.

It is built at a strategic control point of the trade routes of the Central #Mediterranean and was an important fortified state since #Antiquity! It is mentioned by #Homer as a beautiful town that #King #Agamemnon gave to #Achilles, and was later conquered by the #Spartans, #Macedonians and the #Romans. During the #Crusader era, the #Venetians tried anything to capture Methoni and convert it to an important naval and commercial base. At that time Methoni was called #Modon and such was its importance in controlling the entrance to the #Ionian and the #Adriatic Sea that together with neighboring Koroni they were called the Eyes of Venice or in Latin "Venetiarum ocellae". That was when the castles and other impressive fortifications were built, exciting modern #visitors!

#Battles and changes of sovereignty with the #Ottomans followed until Methoni officially joined the Kingdom of Greece.

The visitor of Methoni walks ecstatically through the streets of the city under the bright blue sky. The city is rich in ancient Greek #monuments, #Byzantine #churches, Venetian fortifications and #Turkish mosques. The impressive castle that catches the eye stands out and right next to it is an exotic beach with crystal blue sea waters, which are officially the cleanest and clearest in the #European Union.

The Castle of Methoni is one of the most important and perhaps the most beautiful in Greece. It is built on a rock that juts into the sea and is separated from the land by an artificial moat next to the impressive stone bridge with 14 arches. The castle walls are reinforced at intervals with towers. South of the fortress is the #Bourtzi tower, built on a small rocky island. It is connected to the main fort by a bridge. On the eastern side of the castle there is today a small jetty that is part of the port of Methoni. Within the castle walls, you may visit landmarks including the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, the granite stele also known as #Morosini's stele, the built-in carved Venetian lions and the ruins of the Ottoman #baths. The sunset from here is simply breathtaking!

The #settlement of Methoni has been characterized as traditional. The urban plan was drawn up by the French lieutenant-colonel of the Morea Campaign, Joseph-Victor Audoy and follows the model of the Ionian Islands and the cities of southwestern #France. This plan received the approval of the governor Ioannis #Kapodistrias in May 1829 and is thus the first urban planning plan in the history of the modern Greek state.
In Methoni lies one of the first co-educational schools built in the newly founded Greece in 1830, by decision of Kapodistrias.
The church of #Agios #Nikolaos has been characterized as a remarkable example of #ecclesiastical architecture

The village's picturesque guesthouses, #bakeries, shops, #traditional cafes and taverns transfer you to the romance of another era.
Nearby excursions start with Koroni, the twin castle in the east!
Don't miss a stop at the legendary #Navarino, today's Pylos.
While one of the most #tropical #beaches in Greece is Voidokoilia, with its perfect semicircular shape. Golden sand, excellent quality turquoise waters and an impressive #seabed. An irresistible combination. The #exotic coasts of #Messenia have so much beauty and energy that your batteries will be fully charged. And you will breathe free, without stress, distress and thoughts.
#Paradise on earth is located in Greece.
