An example of designing a connection in an arch cable stayed bridge. The bridge is located in downtown Colombus, Ohio over the Scioto River. The bridge is the first in North America and the fifth in the world to use an inclined single-rib-tied arch superstructure. In this example we review the basic design concept discussed in Mechanics of Materials and apply it to a real world structure. The presented dimensions and materials properties used in this example are just some random numbers and the presented design is just for reviewing the basic design concept presented in Chapter of Mechanics of Materials and is not intended to calculate the real load capacity of the connection used in the bridge.
I took pictures of this bridge during my trip to Colombus, while attending in the Annual convention of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). Many thanks to Bryan Woode for assisting in creating the 3D models of the connection.
