Australia is changing how it manages the Murray–Darling Basin, one of the nation's largest and complex river systems that supports roughly 30 billion dollars in agriculture every year.

The Australian government is launching its first round of voluntary water buybacks since major changes were made to the Murray-Darling basin plan last year.

With hundreds more gigalitres of water to be allocated to the environment each year, there'll be less water for farming.

Putting a roof over cows or switching to high return crops like almonds are two examples of how water policy is rapidly changing Australian farming.

Its almost like this huge change is occurring right before our eyes... and while farmers are living it each day, its reshaping the way one of our greatest natural resources is being used.

Landline's Kath Sullivan explains.
