Here is a Waldorf homeschool tip about understanding the importance of proper pencil grip for your grades child. The first three digits (thumb, forefinger, and middle finger) are the primary digits to be used for handwriting grip and articulation.  These three digits are the most independent of the digits and thus have a much greater associated impact on neural activity.  All fine motor development, which is crucially important in young children, requires the activity of all five digits, but the first three are of primary importance.

We can support this healthy development by ensuring that the children in our care begin the writing path with the proper pencil grip. It may take a lot of reminders for the first couple of months, but once it is established a good pencil grip will make writing more comfortable and more enjoyable.  This gives that child a better opportunity to engage in a healthy activity for longer.
