Is the RTX 3050 worth it in mid 2022? We're going to be discussing this topic as we take a look at the MSI RTX 3050 Gaming X 8GB graphics card.

The RTX 3050 8GB graphics card has been on the market since January of 2022. During its initial release, it seemed as if it was the only RTX 3000 graphics card that was readily available on most store shelves as it was targeted towards 1080P and 1440P gamers, and offered unfavorable crypto mining performance when compared to other RTX 3000 cards currently on the market.
With cryptocurrency lower than we've seen in years and the chip shortage coming to a hopeful end, is the RTX 3050 still worth your time now that we're seeing more RTX 3000 cards on store shelves closer to MSRP pricing?
The build quality of the MSI RTX 3050 Gaming X 8GB GPU is honestly quite amazing thanks to its full-length shroud surrounding the Twin Frozr Torx 4.0 cooling system and full-length aluminum backplate. By using only 2 fans the MSI RTX 3050 Gaming X keeps its overall length at bay, meaning it can be placed in many more systems that may have fitment restrictions for longer cards. I'm also a huge fan of the coloring scheme they chose this year, as well as their subtle inclusion of just the RGB logo on the side of the card itself.
As for performance, well... It's kind of a mixed bag. One on hand the MSI RTX 3050 Gaming X is able to keep frame rates to a respectable level in both 1080P and 1440P and even offers higher frame-rate gaming options with either/both DLSS and competitive in-game settings. Where things begin to fall apart for me is the price. The increased launch MSRP made sense to a degree with most other RTX 3000 cards being next to impossible to source; however, now that we are seeing other models popping up on store shelves and prices being driven down, does the RTX 3050 really still hold it's value at $500CAD?
The short answer is... No. I think the RTX 3050 has a lot to offer its target market; however, its current price is just too close to that of a new RTX 3060, and sometimes even the RTX 3070. Not only that but with rumors of an impending RTX 4000 launch sometime in late 2023, I think would-be buyers may pass on this card in favor of upcoming releases, or the price drops that may follow them. With that being said, I would be more than comfortable recommending this card should the prices fall closer to $400CAD, which is where I think the sweet spot lies for the RTX 3050.
