The Canon R50 is finally here. A true replacement of the most popular M50. And this time, it isn’t just a new mount. It has much better video specs than ever. First we have 10Bit color (In HDR Mode), then we also have 6K oversample 4K. No crop at all. Also DPAF even in 4K. And I gotta say, the 4K image looks amazing. Its super sharp. I had the original M50 and I loved that camera so much. And this R50 is even better.

So you might say, why didn’t you just go for the R7 for video? It shoots Un-cropped 4K 60p, it has the C-Log 3 and IBIS. Battery life also better. Yes, but for me I like to work with limitations. And I think this R50 can also be a very good video camera too if you know how to work around.

First IBIS, yes the camera only has E-IS. But I can always use an IS lens to make it work. In fact, most of the Canon lenses have lens IS. Second, even though the sensor is only APS-C, but I can put a speedbooster to achieve a full frame ish look. Third, there is a EOS-HD C-log Picture Profile that you could install it. But of course Canon Log would be better because the EOS-HD could only achieve 65% of the C-Log. It’s not the best.

But if I could save USD$820 (AUD$1210) not to go for the R7. I can actually use the money to buy more lenses. Especially the R7 footage will not look 100 times better over the R50. The normal 4K will look very similar.

So what’s the difference between the R50 and the M50? Oh well, there is a lot. First we have full pixel read out from 6K, meaning you get so much more detail in 4K. Second, we have 10 Bit colour. Yes, 10bit colour in such an affordable camera. Third, we have DPAF when shooting 4K. And the Video AF works really well. Before the M50, you can’t use DPAF in 4K mode. And it crops in a lot (2.56x crop), plus the screen resolution was so bad. Sometimes you can’t even see if that was in focus or not. So Canon pretty much fixed all the problems.

Mind you, this camera doesn’t support Canon Log. So you gotta be very careful with your exposure. What I did in this video was, I underexposed half a stop. I rather have a noisy shadow than overexposed shots.
