In 2018, John Allen Chau ventured to North Sentinel Island, home to the isolated Sentinalese people who have chosen to remain cut off from the outside world. Despite strict laws prohibiting visits to the island without government permission, Chau paid local fishermen to transport him there. His intention was to spread Christianity among the islanders.
Chau made several attempts to approach the island, but faced hostile reactions from the Sentinalese. He tried to communicate, offer gifts, and sing worship songs, but was met with laughter, bewilderment, and aggression. In his final encounter, a boy shot an arrow that struck the Bible Chau held, causing him to retreat. On November 17, Chau asked the fishermen to leave him behind.
Later, the fishermen witnessed the islanders dragging Chau's lifeless body and observed his burial on the shore. Despite Indian authorities' efforts to recover the body, they were met with hostility and eventually abandoned their attempts.
