Ibuprofen is a member of the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, that are mainly used to treat inflammation; for pain relief; and to reduce fever.
Ibuprofen is commonly used in the treatment of chronic pain caused by osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis. And gout.
It is also given to relieve mild to moderate pain in situations like muscle sprain. Joint pain. Pain associated with migraine. And dental pain.
In addition, it is indicated to relieve post operative pain, preferably in combination with other analgesics.
Dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation is another instant where ibuprofen is indicated.
It is also given to relive fever in adults and children. Finally, ibuprofen is indicated for the closure of patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants.
Common adverse effects of ibuprofen include, GI bleeding,
Nephrotoxicity, Hypersensitivity reactions, Heart failure, Confusion, Hyperkalemia.
And less frequently, thrombocytopenia, headache, dizziness, and blurred vision.
