Established in 1961, Aota has been a renowned Japanese Chinese restaurant for over 60 years. Originally started by a couple, it is now taken over and run by their son and mother.

Despite the sweltering 40℃ kitchen temperatures in summer, where air conditioning doesn't reach, the founder mother, now over 80, still works there.

"When I started this shop, there weren't any major roads, and this area was a port. Many small boats used to come here, and North Shinagawa was a fishing village. Eventually, the sea was reclaimed, major roads were built, and many convenience stores sprang up, resulting in less foot traffic around our shop."

Aota, which has witnessed the changing landscape of the town, continues its business as a family-run restaurant. The nostalgic and warm ambiance of the place, retaining its old-fashioned charm, has even been used as a location for drama shootings, making it irresistible to those who love local Chinese eateries.

As orders for ramen, fried rice, Chinese bowls, and mixed noodles come pouring in, the son masterfully handles the wok while the mother supports by plating and serving. "My shoulders hurt, so I can't lift heavy items onto the counter," she murmurs, prompting her son to momentarily leave the wok to carry the prepared dishes to the counter. The atmosphere is filled with the homely feeling and teamwork unique to a family-run establishment.

The son has inherited the tastes of sauces and broths, as well as the wok-handling techniques from his parents, preserving the "unchanged flavor" for over 60 years since its establishment. Their signature curry rice has a hint of Chinese soup, giving it a mild, gentle taste typical of a Chinese eatery. It's the perfect place for those seeking nostalgic local Chinese food.

Now, let's dig in.
