Hurricane Beryl continues to move toward Jamaica as a "dangerous" Category 4 storm and its core is anticipated to impact the island by midday Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center says the storm remains a threat although it is forecast to weaken "during the next day or two."

As of the latest advisory, NHC forecasters say, "Beryl is forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity while it passes near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night."

It's the first named hurricane of the season and the earliest a Category 4 storm has ever formed in the Atlantic. The previous record for the earliest Category 4 hurricane was Hurricane Dennis on July 8, 2005.

Hurricane Beryl is about 185 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, according to the latest advisory. Forecasters say the hurricane is moving at 20 mph with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph.
