The ElectroMotion ESL X is one of the latest hybrid loudspeaker systems from the American company Martin Logan. Hybrid means that it uses an electrostatic panel together with a conventional cone driver for the low frequencies. Why such a solution? From a design point of view, a single electrostatic driver would be the most logical choice. However, there are limitations to both the size of the panel (which would become too large) and the extension of the low frequency range that advise against this route. This is where Martin Logan's aforementioned hybrid approach comes into play: the 86 x 22 cm electrostatic panel covers the entire range from 400 Hz onwards, leaving the 20.3 cm bass driver - housed in the base - to handle the low frequencies. This configuration allows the electrostatic panel to maintain a footprint compatible with the needs of a home, while still properly covering the entire frequency range thanks to the contribution of the woofer. Electrostatic panels are renowned for the incredible spatiality of the acoustic scene they are able to offer the listener, who is literally immersed in a soundscape. They are also characterised by low distortion, accuracy and clarity. At the same time, however, they lack the dynamics and punch typical of conventional cone speakers. The hybrid solution proposed by Martin Logan therefore combines the best of both philosophies without sacrificing either.
The model under review is the middle speaker in the ElectroMotion range, which is the smaller of the two hybrid ranges offered by the US manufacturer.
