The long-delayed fourth runway at will finally become operational from July 13. Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Sanjeev Kumar confirmed the date on Tuesday. Once that happens, the Indian capital’s IGIA will have as many runways as Washington’s Dulles International Airport. The next few months promise to be very exciting for India’s busiest airport as the elevated taxiway, the first in India, and an expanded Terminal 1 are set to open by September. Once the fourth runway gets operational, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) plans to close the other two runways — the main runway between Terminal 1 and 3 and the one closest to the Shivaji statue — for repairs. If all goes as planned, IGIA will have all four runways functioning within a year to boost its capacity to well over 100 flights an hour. The main runway (10/28) will be shut for recarpeting (after the fourth runway is in service) and should start handling flights before the year-end, or early next year. Around March next year, the runway closest to the Shivaji statue side (11R/29L) will be closed for about two months for minor repairs. By next June-July, IGIA will have all four runways operational.
