How to build a wood model ship from scratch!

General Summary: This video walks a hobbyist through the steps of creating a wood ship model step by step.   It is designed for those who have never built a wood model ship before, and are either 1) nervous regarding the perceived complexity of building a model ship and/or 2) do not wish to pay an exorbitant amount of money for a model ship kit which might not be completed.

As a modeler views these videos, they will note several versions of the ship being built.  This is a very easy model ship to build, and can be configured/modified in a myriad of ways to suit the modelers taste.  It is possible to end up with very different looking models based upon the woods/colors/ornamentation chosen throughout the build.

Rough overview fragments below..

This is the first video is a series of videos I’m creating showing step by step how to build an intricate sailing ship model. The hard thing about ship models is the sheer amount of time they take to complete.  Most quality models literally take years of painstaking work.

With this in mind, I decided to create a model ship someone with no previous experience or specialized tools could build.   I settled on a design most people will recognize, and which is also fairly easy to build.  The Chinese junk.  Incidentally, the word junk is derived from the Javanese word “Jong”, which means “ship” or “large vessel”.

This slide shows the deck of one of my previous versions.  The fun thing about this project is that you can literally use any type of wood you wish.  Strict beginners might choose to use all basswood which can be found in local craft stores, whereas experienced builders may choose to use exotic woods.  Those using basswood will typically be painting their versions, which is what has been done to the rails on this slide.  Those using specialty woods will probably stain their versions.  It’s entirely up to you.

This build is what is known as a plank-on-bulkhead project.  This means that the kit is built around a profile former (the center spine of the ship on the right side of the screen) with individual bulkheads joined to it perpendicularly.  The planking of the vessel wraps around the bulkheads on the sides, and over the tops, in order to form the shape of the hull and deck.  I have downloadable plans on my Patreon site (the link is in the description of this video), but you can also hit pause here, grab a sheet of thin paper, and just trace the plans right off your screen.

It can be very trying to construct a model ship with warped plywood, and can lead to abandoned projects.    Once you have your plywood (a 12” x 12” piece is plenty), it is time to print out the plans (unless you have already traced them).

Once you have your bulkheads cut out, you can then use saws/files/sandpaper in order to bring them to their final shapes.  Now you DO want to take your time on this part. One of the most important things about any model ship build is to make sure that the profile former and its associated bulkheads are cut out and sanded with accuracy.  If these components are misshaped, the planking will be challenging to install.

Perhaps the model ship was knocked over unnoticed while drying and the bulkheads “set” in the wrong position.
