It’s not enough to describe Mr. Byson Kaula as a lucky man. He comes from Balaka. He was found guilty of murder in 1992 and was sentenced to death. But while on the death row he was nearly executed three times - but on each occasion the hangman stopped work before hanging all the prisoners on his list. And that is how he survived, until Malawi stopped executing people altogether.

24 years after doing time, Mr. Byson Kaula was released and is a free man.

In 201, after a review of his case, alongside others of nearly 170 prisoners eligible for resentencing, 139 prisoners were released, including Byson. It was discovered that the courts had not gathered enough evidence at the time they sentenced him to death in 19992. He now goes back to prison as a volunteer at weekends, to advise other ex-prisoners who are going through the same experience.
