On October 13, 1993, British Columbia's Dr. Michael Smith received the Nobel Prize for his work on site-directed mutagenesis, a technique which for the first time allowed researchers to alter specific parts of the DNA code and understand how genes work, or why they don’t work.

Drs. Brett Finlay, Jennifer Gardy, Marco Marra and Smith himself explain site-directed mutagenesis, and what that meant for genomics research.
