The bicycle as a lifestyle
The bicycle as a lifestyle product, status symbol and accessory: The search for something special and unique is causing small bicycle manufacturers in the country to flourish. Frame building is considered the supreme discipline. The frame gives the bike character. It is the central construction that supports and connects all the parts and ensures how the bike rides. But only very few take on this challenge. Don't just screw components together, design the bike frame yourself and build it yourself! There are just 20 frame builders in Germany. He is one of them: Alexander Clauss builds steel bicycles in Pforzheim, Baden. Each one is a handmade one-off and firms under "Portus" - the name of Pforzheim under the ancient Romans.
The Black Forest native specializes in cargo bikes. Since as early as the end of the 19th century, these bikes have had a long tradition as courier vehicles, rolling workshops - or even mobile espresso stands. Thanks to congested roads, electric drive, new style and purchase premiums, this type is experiencing an impressive revival today.
But what does the mechanical engineer and inventor do differently from others? His idea is called the "compact cargo bike." The effective length is basically identical to that of a normal bicycle. Nevertheless, the compact cargo bike can easily carry children and groceries. Its terrain is the city. Climate-friendly, quiet, and always in the fresh air thanks to its handling and electric motor, it's not even particularly tedious. That's the future.
