മഴ വന്ന കാലത്ത് മലയപ്പുലയന്‍ തന്റെ മാടത്തിന്റെ മുറ്റത്ത് നട്ട വാഴ, ജന്മിയുടെ ആജ്ഞപ്രകാരം അയാള്‍ക്ക് കാഴ്ചയായി കൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്ന അയാളുടെ നിസ്സഹായതയാണ് കവിതയുടെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. വഴ പതിയെ മുളച്ചുവരുമ്പോള്‍ അത് പഴമായി മാറുന്ന കാലത്തെ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ ആഗ്രഹത്തിനെ നിഷ്കരുണം ഭേദിക്കുകയാണ് ജന്മിയുടെ ആജ്ഞ.
ജന്മി കുടിയന്‍ വ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ കാലത്ത് ചങ്ങമ്പുഴ നിസ്സഹായരോട് തന്റെ അനുഭാവം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചത് ഈ കവിതയിലൂടെയാണ് ഒരു കഥ മുഴുവന്‍ ദൃശ്യമെന്നോണം ആ വരികളില്‍ നമുക്ക് കാണാം.
