How to replace the timing gear on a Ford Model A engine.

There are timing gears made of various types of materials, ie pressed fiber (original), aluminum, brass, etc. I decided to use the original pressed fiber.  Nevertheless it’s the same steps, which ever one you choose.

Note: I already had the radiator off, so this is different than a vehicle with the radiator on. This made it much easier to film/video.  The gear came off relatively easily. You might have to use a puller to remove the gear, and may have to remove your radiator to have better access.

The Model A suppliers sell a special tool to enable you to remove the camshaft timing gear retaining nut using a 1/2” ratchet or breaker bar. Mine came loose rather easily without damaging the camshaft nut.
If leaving the radiator on or if the nut is “stubborn”, look into the special tool. If it still will not come off, carefully apply heat to “break it loose”…. Ie. rusted in place, or if someone used Loctite on it.

I also needed to replace the engine motor mounts (front and rear), so I did that at the same time. That isn’t necessary, but should be looked into and if needed is a good idea to replace them while there.
