Tapovani Mata Sant Subhadra was born in 1930 in Udupi. In her youth out of a spiritual quest she  became a disciple of Swami Vishwesha Theerta Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt, Udupi, Karnataka, in the Madhvacharya tradition. She then came to the Himalayas, wandering deeper and deeper into the cold interiors of the Himalayas, and followed spiritual disciplines and yogic practices for many years. After following spiritual disciplines for years, Sant Subhadra settled in Gangotri for twelve years. She then moved up to Goumukh, where the holy river Ganga originates, and again moved up to Tapovan, located at a height of 14,500 feet & settled finally in a tiny cave. Tapovan is a place where even expert mountaineers hesitate to go in the winter, a place surrounded by snow throughout the year. Sometimes in Tapovan, there are relentless howling snowstorms, and the sun is not seen for months. Here, in a cave, Mataji did yogic practices for about nine years. Here, Tapovani-Ma went deep into herself and had numerous experiences with God, and realization.

Mataji acquired her name Tapovani-Mata while she was at Tapovan. She also became a legend for her love and spiritual knowledge. She was also the only woman among the handful of spiritual practitioners in the scattered caves braving the rigorous environment of the deep interiors of the Himalayas. She would not only pursue her own deep meditation, she would also lovingly serve visitors who ventured to Tapovan in summer months, with basic food. 'Mata' which means 'mother', was thus a meaningful and appropriate epithet by which followers addressed her.

In the year 2000, full of bliss, she returned to serve humanity. Today, her work is done out of two centers – an ashram in Gangori (on the outskirts of Uttarkashi) and a little hut in Dharali (65 km from Uttarkashi en route to Gangotri).

Mataji's mission now is to spread the message of love, peace, devotion and spirituality through service.  Mataji emphasizes on the spirit of selfless service, without any personal desires or motives. She says – “All human beings are Narayana and we are the Narayana family so we all should work hand in hand for each others benefit. We belong to God Narayana family”.
