Unboxing the Red Magic 5S
Unboxing the Red Magic 5S smartphone, plus a full tour of the hardware and software and an in-depth gaming test with PubG Mobile/Call of Duty. I've done full benchmarking with Game Bench, testing the performance and battery life while reviewing those gamer phone features. So here's my hands-on verdict of what could be the best value gaming blower of 2020, and alternative to Pro rivals like the Black Shark 3.

The specs are certainly beefy on the Red Magic 5S, although not quite as competitive vs the ROG Phone 3. That Snapdragon 865 platform can still blaze through PubG or CoD on top detail settings at 60FPS. Battery life isn't quite as impressive, with the 4500mAh battery draining in just under four hours when gaming. That's with 144Hz active however, and making full use of gamer features like the shoulder buttons.
After reviewing the grunt on the Red Magic 5S I also checked out the camera tech, including the 64MP primary lens with Sony's IMX686 sensor. It's nothing revolutionary but takes respectable photos and up to 4K resolution video at 60FPS.
So is this one of the greatest gaming phones of 2020? It's certainly one of my favourites at the £500 price point, but let me know your own verdict below!
