In this video I show my four main characters converting their weapons from fully tempered +99 starter weapons into there ultimate form.

The ultimate weapons can gain stats both from their initial form (at half the rate normal) and there final forms.  Technically any convertible weapon can do this but the ultimate weapons are the ones with the most to gain by doing so.  They do not gain additional CC from upgrades as you can see in the video.

Most people wouldn't go through all the trouble of upgrading the starter weapons to max first and then converting them, as the math will tell you that you can get max stats (or so close) with just upgrading the final form using kyleicious quality that it seems like a waste of time.  And that's even more true if your only going to casually dualize.

However, it is VERY difficult to do Barbed to Kylecious on 8 peieces of gear, the barbed shards in particular taking a much longer time to farm than you would ever need to temper any level of gear.  So, the next best thing is using an easier quality, or a longer process to reach Kyleicious, to which I did both.

I started off farming Lhant hill for (Cool, Keen, Rigid) qualities, Lhant hill cliffs for (Cold, Cute, Oily) qualities, Lhant road (east) for (Cool, Grand, cold) qualities.  The fights were easy, short, and with fish & chips + book of acquisition on chaos the drop rates were nearly 100%.  I would turn various combinations of rank 1 shards into noble quality, and then add cool to it to produce guyabulous, this is is 3 step guyabulous quality.  (cute + keen, cute + oily, cold + cold, keen + cool all yield noble).

For weapons that is 12patk, 13catk, 10 acc.  which leaves the average rate of stat gain about +5-6 per area for each level.  Which is why those weapons were hovering around in the 600's before I converted them.  For weapons, you can use 3 step guyabulous for the ultimates as well and still cap out, without ever using Kylecicious.  Armors are different, however, because it gives 5 def/cdef, and 20 eva.  This leaves the average per level gain of def/cdef at around 2-3 per level, though evasion will easily cap (and that's more important anyway.)

Still, I used 3 step guyabulous on the armors initially for simplicity.  Around +50 on the base forms I switched to using 3 step Kyleicious and the occasional 2 step kyleicious for the armors.  Grand + suave, Noble + noble, noble + suave, all yield the Barbed quality, you then just add a rigid and your at Kyleicious.  In stratha desert (west) you can farm Cool shards, noble shards, and suave shards with relative easy, in stratha desert (east) you can farm rigid shards, suave shards, and grand shards with relative ease, additionally they do drop barbed shards here but the rate isn't quite high enough to skip 3 step altogether.  3 stepx2, 2 stepx1, repeat.

If you only wanted to do 1-2 items maxed, it would be a much simpler thing to simply convert the starter weapon right away, and use 2 step kyleicious to get the gains you want.  But if your trying to dualize for the entire party, this ends up being a much more effecient method.

As an aside, dualizing this much for the average playthrough is overkill.  I'm playing a NO EXP run, and in addition I keep giving myself further disadvantages by halving my stats and such.  The main reason I want highly dualized gear is for the accuracy/evasion/CC.  I want to be able to combo effectively while I live in constant fear of being one shotted if I fail to dodge effectively, that is.

As a great resource for further understanding the complexity of the dualizing system I highly recommend Wii306's guide at FAQs, its where I learned everything I needed to know.  In addition, besides the japanese wiki, its the best source of reference information on where shards can be found, or what combinations yield what result.
