Of the more than 2000 known species of jellyfish, 51 of them are identified as box jellyfish, member of Cubozoa class, and are grouped into 2 orders and 8 families, named for their body shape, having a box-like medusa. Their box bells are just one of the remarkable traits which set them apart from other jellyfish,  but there are more about them than meets the eye.

Most jellyfish are generally regarded as passive drifters, they depend on natural ocean current to transport them from place to place, as they have a little ability to swim against the current. This is not the case for box jellyfish, as they can actively swim against it and to pursue and capture prey,  they have the ability to control their direction, in fact they can swim at maximum speed of up to 2 meters per second.

Most jellyfish do not possessed eyes to see, thus, they rely on their other sense organs to detect light and prey. But box jellyfish have a complex visual system, they have 24 eyes that are arranged in clusters around the bell, 6 eyes on each of their 4 structures called rhopalia, bearing varying visual capabilities, divided into two (2) categories as per their functions, 20 simple eyes (ocelli) that are only capable of distinguishing between dark and light,  and 4 true eyes that consists of retinas, corneas and lenses, like that of vertebrates, that are capable  of seeing specific points of light and forming images.

Jellyfish is generally described as stinging creature,  but there are actually non-stinging jellyfish in the ocean. But most of them do sting, their tentacles are armed with numerous tiny sac called cnidocytes. Each cnidocyte holds a long, coiled, thread-like hollow-tube called  nematocyst, which contain a poisonous substance (venom), and which sting when triggered by a touch of a prey, they intend to use it either to capture prey or to protect themselves from predators.

Jellyfish don't intentionally attack human, they sting when you brush up against them or step on them, and the reaction one may get from a stung depends upon several factors, one,  is the type of jellyfish you encounter, most jellyfish are harmless,  but

few are fatal and deadly, that includes most species of box jellyfish.
