Chandram Bhaja Manasa, in ragam Asaveri, is a composition of Muthuswami Dikshithar, one among the Carnatic Trinity of composers. This song is part of a series of compositions known as the Navagraha, or Vara Krithis. One unique aspect of this series of compositions is that there's a song for each day of the week, Chandram Bhaja Manasa being associated with Monday. In addition to this, each of the Vara Krithis are set to a different thalam (rhythmic structure). Chandram Bhaja Manasa is set to the thalam of Chathusra Jaathi Matya.

In this song, Muthuswami Dikshithar describes various aspects of the moon (Chandra), including both its physical qualities as well as its impact on life. As he says, the moon is the creator of the night and the ornament on Shiva's head. We should pay our respects and sing the praises of the great moon. Chandram Bhaja Manasa.

This rendition is by Swami Venugopal
Accompanied by Prashanth Ravichandran on Kanjira
Swami Aathikesaven on Morsing and Bavanika on Thambura.

Swami shares: This is one of my favorite songs, especially because of how Muthuswami Dikshitar has described the moon in so many interesting ways. I also can clearly remember the day we learned this song, even though it was several years ago. It was not only on Pournami (full moon) but it was also a Monday!
