How to Sing Better in 3 Minutes:

Many students want to learn how to sing better and while sometimes it takes years of focused practice, I wanted to give you one quick exercise to teach you how to sing better in a few minutes.

The exercise that I want to show you today is called the “ng” exercise as in the word “rung”.

The reason that this exercise is so incredibly powerful is because it works for so many different kinds of singers.

While everyone wants to know how to sing better, each vocalist has their own vocal tendencies and issues that they need to overcome.

In order to sing better, it’s important to 1) become aware of what’s holding you back and 2) work with exercises that are designed to correct any bad habits you’ve formed while learning how to sing.

However, in the case of the “ng” exercise, I chose this exercise because it works for singers no matter what their vocal issues are.

I’ll show you what I mean.

Say that you’re tendency is to sing too heavily when you approach the top part of your voice. The “ng” exercise is fantastic for allowing your voice to thin out enough to get you up to your head voice, without going to falsetto.

Or, if you’re a lighter singer and you need a bit more edge or twang to hold onto those top notes in your voice, the “ng” gives you just enough bite to make it up to those high notes without straining.

In today’s example, I’m going to give you the “ng” exercise on an octave and a half scale.

The octave and a half vocal scale is so important when learning how to sing.

That’s because the octave and a half scale has big gaps between each of the notes so that your voice allows change as it ascends to the higher register.

When the notes we sing are very close together, it’s very tempting to try to sing them in the exact same way.

This tends to reinforce our bad singing habits.

Since the whole point of this exercise is to improve on these bad habits, the large gaps between the notes in the scale are a big part of the point.

Once you learn to sing the octave and a half scale, you’ll be able to sing seamlessly from the bottom to the top part of your voice without any breaks or strain.

Here’s how you do it on the “ng” exercise.

Say the word “rung” like the rung of a ladder.

Now say the word rung and hold the “ng” consonant at the end of it.

Once you’ve found this ugly “ng” consonant, see if you can hold that note on a pitch.

Once you’ve found that “ng” on a pitch, try to sing the octave and a half scale.

Remember that as you’re learning how to sing this “ng” scale, it’s important that you’re not too heavy or too light.

If you feel that you’re straining or breaking into falsetto, you’re doing it wrong.

Simply reset, say the word “rung” on the pitch and try to sing the scale again.
