Hormone receptor-positive breast cancer refers to a subtype of breast cancer where the cancer cells have receptors for hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. These receptors play a crucial role in the growth and proliferation of breast cancer cells. When hormones like estrogen bind to these receptors, they can stimulate the cancer cells to divide and grow, contributing to tumor progression.

One of the key aspects of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer is its responsiveness to hormone-based therapies. Drugs such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) and aromatase inhibitors (AIs) work by either blocking the hormone receptors or reducing the production of estrogen in the body, thereby inhibiting the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer cells.

The resistance to hormone-based treatments can develop over time, leading to disease progression and the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Ongoing research aims to better understand the mechanisms of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and develop more effective treatments to improve outcomes for patients with this subtype of the disease.
