Today, about 80% of our energy comes from fossil fuels. To limit global warming to below 2°C and as close as possible to 1.5°C, the world must reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by mid-century.

A net-zero economy by mid-century is technically and economically feasible, and is built on abundant, cheap zero-carbon electricity. Transitioning to electricity as the main source of final energy represents the cheapest and most efficient way to decarbonise the economy. Direct electrification will be key to decarbonising many sectors of the economy, including road transport and building heating.
