After 4 months of use here's my honest review of the Fujifilm X100v starting with everything I hate about it.

1. Ergonomics.

Actually holding this camera for more than a few hours isn't fun. I even bought an accessory to make it easier to grip. I guess I can let it slide as it's so lightweight if I have a neck-strap or whatever they I don't need to be gripping it all day. It looks fantastic of course, it holds that retro film camera aesthetic but that's where it ends up lacking a modern ergonomically designed hand grip.

2. Autofocus

Yeah, it's not that good. I think when you understand how to use it, it's not as annoying. For example, if your scene has no details or lacks a strong subject or any contrast, the focus just hunts around and is unsure of where to land. However, if you find a piece of contrast or detail in your frame, it'll be fine. Once you get used to how it focuses you just roll with it. When I use it day to day, I have no issues. but when I hand the camera to someone who has never used it before they seem to question what the focus is doing.

3. Low light

I don't go higher than 3200 iso, maybe 6400. There's a difference between adding grain to get that film vibe and having a ton of noise that ruins the image. When I have used this camera at night, which isn’t often I did find it was just as good as it was in the day and the autofocus is fine. So that’s actually cool but like I said, I don’t push the iso much or shoot at night as it’s only a APS-C sensor so don’t expect the best quality in low light.

4. Clarity Issues...

If you’re playing around with the clarity settings to achieve a film look or have fun with the jpegs the camera will be much slower. It will actually take 1 or 2 seconds after you shoot to process the image. So I just don’t change my clarity settings and hopefully Fujifilm can give us a firmware update or something?

5. Battery Life

It's awful - you’ll need at least 2 if you’re out for a full day of photography. I share some quick and easy wins if you want to optimise the battery life.

Now for a few reasons why I think it's perfect...

1. It's unapologetically itself.

When a camera can do everything, shoot any focal length or work in every situation you've got a lot of freedom, but that freedom can sometimes be uninspiring. I know that sounds strange but limitations can sometimes make the process easier.

When you use the x100v, you know exactly what you're supposed to do with it. And for me, that's basically just point and shoot street photography. I have never found street photography so easy, so calming and so fun with any other camera. Using my R6 which is my workhorse for video/photo work isn't as approachable, I need to decide what lens I'm using, probably shoot in full manual and decide what bag I need to carry around to accommodate it. With the x100v, I know exactly what I'm shooting and how I'm going to do. It does honestly make the process of taking photos very fun.

2. The lens is amazing

I’m still shocked by the quality of images this lens can produce. I’m not going to pixel peep into each corner of every photo but it definitely rivals other standard 35mm prime lens on full frame mirrorless cameras I’ve ever used. This camera isn’t sold a fully working professional camera but it’s definitely capable of producing top quality professional grade photos.

3. The hybrid viewer finder is great.

Being able to switch from optical to electronic is so nice. I generally keep it on optical to maintain that tactical manual experience as I can always just screen for the electronic preview. The switch to change your view is nice.

4. The raw files are incredible.

In many cases I’ve been shooting 2 thirds or a full stop over exposed as I really like my street images to be bright and colourful. The highlights are so easy to edit with and adjust in post. One of the fun things about shooting with the x100v is the jpegs, but I still shoot RAW + Jpeg purely because of how great the raw files are to work with.

5. JPEGs and Film Simulations

From testing out different film looks, creating my own simulations and looking at other peoples work with the x100v. I genuinely look forward to picking this camera up and seeing what I can make.

6. You look hipster...

Especially with street photography if you stand out, get in peoples way, look intimidating, all that gets in the way the process. If you’re carrying a proper professional grade camera with all the bells and whistles, people avoid you. But this thing... look how cute it is. People don’t care, you can’t be a serious photographer with this little toy. You blend in and everything is just easier.
